In our home we like to have an open-door policy. Where friends and family know where to find the coffee, feel at home to grab a blanket and find the best spot on the couch and know there is a room available to house them during their visit. The guest bedroom for us was a space that was equally important as the rest of the rooms in our house as it is home to some of our favourite people.

With our guest bedroom we wanted to create a space that had all the necessities without compromising on luxury. We were really lucky with the bones of the room and the height the ceilings had to offer. High ceilings instantly create space and give the illusion of ‘more’ room even if the square footage isn’t that large itself. To emphasis the height we stuck to a light and bright colour scheme to keep that natural sunlight reflecting off each corner of the room. For our wall colour I selected Resene Secrets, which is a frosted celadon green with a mood of inscrutability.

I knew when setting up this space I wanted richness and depth. The subtle light green walls, deep timber ceiling and crisp white trims was a perfect canvas to to use darker colours to create mood. Naturally, your bed will be the feature of your space so I went with the striking Suri Duvet Set in Ink Blue. This deep blue really sets the mood and acts as the anchor for all the accents I was to add. To create vibrancy and depth I opted for textured monochrome cushions in contrasting textures and weaves and a warm patterned throw. And of course, adding the ever so important cushion chop, to make it feel lived in and cosy. The Marble Side Table in sage-like green compliments the rich blue duvet in adding texture and depth as it greets you at the door.

When working with more of a boxy space adding reflective structures is key. The Infinity Mirror was perfect at creating more depth and naturally reflecting aspects of the room. The elongated shape of the mirror also draws your eye up with the height of the ceilings making the space feel light, bright and airy.

Adding the final touches of decor is my favourite part of styling and instead of having lots of little things scattered, I opted for stand-out pieces that emphasise the space of the room. The Fine Art Print is beautifully oversized and really creates a focal point for that wall. Next to it sits the beautiful Pico Bottle Set in Emerald with fresh, contrasting poppies picked from our garden.

The emerald green pops against the black and white accents and creates richness. Keeping plants alive isn’t one of my strong points so the Bird of Paradise Tree was a win-win because um its fake (so I don’t have to wait for it to turn brown before realising I need to water it) and the height of the leaves, again, draws your eye upwards emphasising the space of the room. Oh and the colour is just so lush.

When decorating your space, you don’t need to be matchy-matchy. Sometimes staying within the same hue of colour is a great way to create uniformity as well as substance. All the accents in our guest bedroom stick to a cool hue but allowed us to use every part of the spectrum, creating diversity.

Your guest bedroom is a chance to create that home away from home experience for guests, while bringing all the practicality along with it. Pretty, practical and perfect.
