Wall decorations can be a great talking point, they help draw the eye and pulls together the space making your home feel inviting.

Wall art comes in all shapes, sizes and patterns so it can be a little daunting to choose and to visualise how they will look in your own home. Here are some tips to consider when you want to find the perfect piece!

Choose the wall

Before you start looking for artwork, think about where it’s going to go. If you are looking at a wall in a living room or a bedroom, a statement artwork makes a big impact. In entrances and hallways small groupings help add interest and a personal touch.

Colour is key

The easiest way to find artwork that will work well in your space is to find a piece that incorporates colours and shades already present in the room. If your favourite piece of furniture is your blue sofa, try to find an artwork with some blue to tie the room together. If you have a room with quite neutral colours, you might want to look for a bold or colourful artwork to stand out.

The important thing is to find something that you love that complements the space. This could be through texture, style, colour and theme. Be confident and experiment a little!

Choose the size

Getting the size right is an important step in the process. It is a common mistake to buy a piece that is too small – bigger is usually better! If you place an artwork above a sofa the artwork should be at least two thirds the width of the sofa or larger. Same goes for the space above the bed. Highland cow could be a good one to show here – covers off scale nicely.

If you have a smaller size artwork that you really love, you can either group it with other similar pieces or frame it in an oversize frame to increase the impact.

If you are placing the artwork on a wall with no furniture, consider the width and height of the wall to get an idea of what size your artwork it should be. The more space your art will cover, the better.

Choose the position

When you’ve finally found the perfect artwork, you need to figure out exactly where you want to position it before you start hammering. Artwork should always be positioned at eye level.

Once you have an idea of a general spot, it might help to frame out the area with some tape to visualise the space. If you’ve going for a gallery wall with smaller pieces, try to map it out on the floor. The measurement between each frame should be about six centimetres.

Take a step back and adjust until you are happy with the position.
